100 Best Communities for Young People

The 100 Best Communities for Young People competition honors outstanding efforts on behalf of young people by multiple sectors of communities. In cities, suburbs, small towns and counties across the country, this annual competition is leading communities to assess their efforts, work more effectively together for young people, and share best practices.

Several Michigan Communities found their way onto this prestigious list this year. Michigan's Promise is pleased to announce that the following Michigan Communities are counted among the nation's best for young people:

Greater Midland Community

Situated in the Flint/Tri-Cities region of Michigan, Greater Midland’s residents nurture its young people and encourage them to attain healthy behaviors, a sense of responsibility for those less fortunate, educational excellence, and high moral standards, allowing them to grow into well-adjusted, successful, self-sufficient adults.  Before this community’s young people become adults, to help them develop and improve during their adolescent years, Midland Kids First actively pursues objectives in four need areas identified by the group.

Marquette and Alger Counties

Marquette and Alger Counties uphold the Five Promises philosophy with programs and collaborations that improve the lives of youth.  The Great Parents/Great Start is as a resource for families with children from infants to age five.  It recognizes that education begins at birth and works to support parents in their role as a child’s first teacher.  Great Start offers programs and resources that encourage positive parent-child interaction in daily activities, provides information on intellectual, social and physical growth in young children, promotes school readiness and teaches parental skills that can help children grow and thrive.

Sanilac County

Sanilac County, Michigan has a strong collaborative focused on coordinating and expanding programs, services and support for the children and youth of their community.  The partnership in their collaborative include the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners, Family and Juvenile Courts, WMIC Sanilac Broadcasting Systems, all seven school districts, law enforcement, faith based organizations, local businesses and over 15 nonprofit organizations ranging from the Child Abuse Prevention Council to the Sanilac Hockey Association.
